Respiratory Disease Management

Respiratory illness impacts more than your ability to breathe—it influences energy, function, and the quality of your life. Dr. Kishan, MD, DM, a pulmonologist in Hyderabad, offers evidence-based, patient-focused care for various respiratory conditions. He holds a DM in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.

Conditions Treated

01. Advanced Management of Bronchial and Severe Asthma:

Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disorder that demands precise diagnosis and ongoing management for sustained control. When resistant to standard therapies, it evolves into severe asthma, requiring advanced treatments such as biologics. Dr. Kishan focuses on early identification and personalised management to reduce exacerbations and support long-term control. Read more about asthma treatment in Hyderabad.

02. Allergy Management—Personalised Treatment for Allergy Relief

If sneezing, wheezing, or persistent cough have become daily companions, allergy may be the hidden culprit. Dr. Kishan offers evidence-based allergen identification and immunotherapy for allergic rhinitis, sinusitis and allergic asthma.

Clinical Focus:

  • Diagnostic testing (SPT, serum IgE panels)
  • Respiratory allergy treatment (rhinitis, sinusitis, asthma)
  • Allergen-specific immunotherapy (SCIT/SLIT)
  • Long-term desensitization and relapse prevention
  • Counseling on environmental control strategies

03. Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Care—Diagnosis & Treatment

ILD encompasses a spectrum of conditions that scar lung tissue and impair oxygen exchange. Dr. Kishan uses HRCT, blood tests and, where needed, lung cryobiopsy to identify the type of ILD, and antifibrotic treatment where appropriate to help slow the loss of lung function.

Clinical Focus:

  • HRCT-based classification of ILD patterns
  • Serological workup for autoimmune ILDs
  • Tissue confirmation via cryobiopsy or thoracoscopy
  • Treatment with Pirfenidone or Nintedanib
  • Monitoring progression and quality-of-life interventions

04. Lung care after COVID, flu and pneumonia

Lung problems can linger after COVID-19, influenza or pneumonia. If you have breathlessness, fatigue, or reduced exercise tolerance after recovering, Dr. Kishan offers structured evaluation and pulmonary rehabilitation to help you regain strength.

Clinical Focus:

  • HRCT chest imaging and spirometry
  • Management of post-COVID pulmonary fibrosis
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation and oxygen weaning
  • Treatment of residual bronchiectasis and airway inflammation
  • Long COVID symptom monitoring and care continuity

05. Lung Cancer Diagnosis—Early Detection & Evaluation

Finding lung cancer early widens the treatment options. Dr. Kishan evaluates nodules and abnormal shadows on chest scans, obtains tissue for diagnosis by bronchoscopy or EBUS-TBNA, and coordinates multidisciplinary referral for treatment.

Clinical Focus:

  • Low-dose CT scan screening for high-risk patients
  • EBUS-guided lymph node sampling and staging
  • Bronchoscopic biopsy and histopathology
  • Genetic testing and referral for targeted therapy
  • Smoking cessation and preventive counseling

06. Flu Diagnosis & Treatment—Care for Flu Symptoms

Swine flu (H1N1) can be unpredictable and rapidly progressive. Dr. Kishan focuses on accurate diagnosis, timely antiviral treatment and steps to lower the risk of complications such as pneumonia.

Clinical Focus:

  • Rapid flu panel testing (RT-PCR)
  • Early antiviral therapy initiation (Oseltamivir)
  • Symptom management and respiratory monitoring
  • Prevention of pneumonia and acute lung injury
  • Immunization guidance and seasonal flu surveillance

07. Early diagnosis of Pneumonia

Pneumonia requires timely intervention to prevent deterioration into sepsis or respiratory failure. Dr. Kishan’s approach combines prompt diagnosis with antimicrobial therapy matched to the likely cause.

Clinical Focus:

  • CXR, HRCT, sputum, and blood cultures
  • Custom antibiotics based on pathogen and resistance profile
  • Non-invasive and invasive oxygen support when needed
  • Management of complications (empyema, abscess)
  • Pneumococcal and influenza vaccination post-recovery

08. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) causes long-term breathlessness, cough and sputum, usually after years of smoking or exposure to biomass smoke, dust or air pollution. The diagnosis is confirmed with spirometry, a lung function test that shows airflow obstruction which does not fully reverse after a bronchodilator. Treatment follows the GOLD guidelines and usually includes long-acting inhalers, a check of inhaler technique at each visit, help to stop smoking and pulmonary rehabilitation. To lower the risk of flare-ups, Dr. Kishan reviews vaccinations, gives a written plan for the early signs of a flare-up and adjusts treatment at regular follow-up. 09. Tuberculosis and Drug-Resistant TB

Tuberculosis (TB) is common in India and most often affects the lungs, causing a cough for more than two weeks, fever, night sweats and weight loss. Diagnosis relies on sputum tests, including microscopy and rapid molecular tests (CBNAAT or Truenat) that also detect rifampicin resistance, together with a chest X-ray or CT scan. When sputum cannot be produced or the results are unclear, bronchoscopy with a lung wash can obtain samples. Treatment follows the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) guidelines. Drug-resistant TB needs further drug-susceptibility testing and a longer or modified regimen, with regular monitoring for side effects. Dr. Kishan also follows up lung damage that remains after TB treatment.

10. Chronic Cough and Bronchiectasis

A cough that lasts more than 3 weeks needs assessment, and in adults a cough lasting more than 8 weeks is called chronic cough. Common causes include asthma, post-nasal drip from allergic rhinitis or sinusitis, acid reflux, some blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors), TB and bronchiectasis. Evaluation starts with a history, examination, chest X-ray and spirometry, followed by a CT scan or bronchoscopy when needed. Bronchiectasis is permanent widening of the airways that causes a daily cough with sputum and repeated chest infections; it is confirmed on an HRCT scan. Treatment includes airway clearance techniques, treating infections based on sputum culture results, and vaccination.

Approach to Care

  • Individualized Assessment: No two lungs are the same. Every patient undergoes a thorough evaluation—history, lifestyle, occupational exposure, environmental triggers, and pulmonary function—to ensure accurate diagnosis and customized treatment.
  • Evidence-Based Protocols:All treatment plans follow internationally recognized guidelines (GINA, GOLD, IDSA) while being tailored to the Indian population.
  • Continuity of Care:Patients remain under specialist care from diagnosis to treatment and dedicated follow-up and complete rehabilitation. Teleconsultations are also available for ongoing monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

What are the warning signs of chronic lung disease?

Persistent cough, breathlessness, wheezing, or chest tightness may signal an underlying lung condition—consult a pulmonologist for timely evaluation.

How soon can I recover from post-COVID breathlessness?

Recovery time varies. Many people improve over weeks to months, and persistent breathlessness should be assessed with lung function tests and imaging.

Are inhalers safe for long-term use?

Yes. When prescribed and used correctly, inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators are both safe and essential in managing asthma and COPD. They have minimal systemic side effects when monitored properly.

Can allergies lead to permanent lung damage?

Yes, if left untreated. Chronic allergic inflammation can cause airway remodeling and reduced lung function. Early diagnosis and appropriate therapy can help prevent progression.

What is the difference between asthma and COPD?

Asthma is often reversible and triggered by allergens, while COPD is typically progressive and linked to smoking or environmental exposure. Both require distinct management strategies. Read the full answer →

When should I consult a pulmonologist for a persistent cough?

If your cough lasts longer than three weeks, worsens over time, or is accompanied by breathlessness, fatigue, or weight loss, it warrants evaluation by a lung specialist in Hyderabad.

Can respiratory diseases be managed without hospitalization?

Yes. Most chronic respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD, and allergic bronchitis can be effectively managed in outpatient settings through inhaled medications, lifestyle changes, and regular follow-ups.

What tests are performed to diagnose lung conditions?

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs), chest X-rays, HRCT scans, bronchoscopy, and blood work help assess lung function, structure, and underlying disease patterns for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. The tests available are described under advanced pulmonary diagnostics.

Is smoking cessation enough to reverse lung damage?

While cessation halts further damage and improves symptoms, existing structural damage in diseases like COPD may not fully reverse. However, quitting remains the most effective step toward preserving lung function.

How can I prevent the worsening of a diagnosed lung condition?

Follow prescribed treatment plans, attend regular reviews, avoid allergens or pollutants, stay updated on vaccinations, and see your pulmonologist regularly so that treatment can be monitored and adjusted.
